CAROUNTE & TOURIST links the Strait of Messina for forty years. In
October 2001, in order to bypass highway Salerno - Reggio Calabria subject of
endless work to modernize, Caronte and Tourist Ferry Boat, launch a pioneering
project "Motorways of the sea" linking the port of Messina to Salerno.
They opened the first fast ferry service "Cartour" from Messina to
Salerno in about seven hours. The ferry service currently includes daily departures and operated
with the m/v Cartour Beta and m/v Cartour Gamma, at
a speed of 25 knots, with a cargo capacity of 800 cars and 150 commercial vehicles and
accommodate up to 1000 passengers. On board there are cabins, seats, bar and restaurant, playground and shops.
On July 1, 2003 Caronte and Tourist Ferry Boat reorganize their activities,
giving the respective branches to the newly shipping Caronte & Tourist SpA and sanctioning, thus merging the
two companies.
